At the 40th Birthday of Destiny Omoze Egeonu

with 11 comments

DALLAS – There is no doubt about the origin of core traditional values in Africa. This was clearly revealed at the very colorful and traditional 40th birthday party of Destiny Egeonu. The cool and rhythmic sounds that permeated the hall from 800 watts speakers kept guests in constant rhythm.

The Egeonu family clearly enjoyed the shower of love from family friends and well wishers as they kept responding to the flow of the beats. Just after the opening prayers by Rev. Dr. Jarmen Agbator, the hall went into a frenzy; literally. There was much to consume and take home too.

ICAN, DFW USA: the audacity of hope

leave a comment »

DALLAS – When it was announced a few months back that Chief Emma Ichu, Omeogaa n’Obosi would chair the ICAN 2009 (Igbo Community Association of Nigeria, DFW) electoral Committee, some people were very leery that he was elected the Committee Chair; not because he was not equal to the task, rather, leery because he is also the ICAN’s Board Chair- the final authoritative arbiter in the event of controversial election.

Little did the leery ones know that this multi tasking guru had few numbers to display during this immediate past election; his dexterous handling of the whole electoral process ultimately earned him the DARLING of ICAN and the most celebrated Electoral Committee Chairman in the history of ICAN. Personally, my respect for this man grew tremendously as a result of the refined precision with which he handled the whole 2009 Electoral process.  Simply put, the ICAN’s 2009 election was IMPECCABLE; thanks to the three man Committee under the able chairmanship of Chief Emma Ichu.

Therefore, Ndi Igbo, friends of Ndi Igbo, please join me while I doff my hat to the Darling of ICAN, Chief Emmanuel Ichu, Omeogaa n’ala Obosi and his Committee members, namely, Chief Bright Anosike and Sir George Opurum for a splendid job. How I wish that the INEC bosses will borrow a leaf or two from the pile of Omeogaa’s electoral leaves.

ICAN has metamorphosed into a much deeper vibrant stage that beats the eyes. What more can one really ask for? For the first time that ICAN can boast of ZERO balance in her account receivables. All 39 Parochial Associations were able to exercise their constitutional democratic rights to elect their leaders free and fair. For the first time in the history of ICAN election that ICAN was able to conduct a general meeting, conduct a general election, conduct a mini fundraising for YICAN and still had enough time to eat and drink while listening to good Igbo music like Igbo brothers and sisters should, all in one night.

For the first time in the history of ICAN election that the food and drinks ran out and more was ordered to the satisfaction of every single soul at the hall. As I sat among the multitude of Ndi Igbo last night, my being was mesmerized by the savory aroma of the lovely accord that hijacked the entire atmosphere of the whole election night. That much craved brotherly love was resonated once again ‘big time’ last night. The level of comportment that was displayed by Ndi Igbo last night is an invigorating assurance that all hopes are not lost; It is already well with Alaigbo! Ndi Igbo ICAN Ekele m unu! jide nu nke unu ji!!

Furthermore, it is with great humility that I congratulate every individual that volunteered to serve Ndi Igbo this time around. Those that got elected and those that fail short of the mandate,You all are winners in my book and ICAN’s book. You do not have to be an elected official to serve; you can still contribute to the stronger growth of ICAN by working closely with the current elected leadership.  Together we all can transport this premier Association to her most exalted glory. Igwe bu ike!

To the President Elect, as I boldly stated during the campaign, I have no infinitesimal amount of doubt that you are equal to the mammoth task that awaits you and cabinet come January. Ndi ICAN has pledged their unflinching support to you, and by the virtue of your landslide victory last night, they have displayed a great deal of confidence towards you. You have been equiped with all you need to do the job, the mantle has been handed over to you, go and make us proud. Congratulations to you for a well deserved victory!

Ndu miri Ndu azu!!! It is already well with Ala Igbo!!!

Ndewo nu!!!

Movie Review: “Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans”

leave a comment »

LOS ANGELES – Nicolas Cage has made quite a career for himself playing erratic characters living dangerously. Whether it’s in “Matchstick Men” or “Leaving Las Vegas,” the Oscar winning actor has proven to be one of the most versatile actors of all time.

In his latest project – call it a case of Cage rage — he’s a cop with a cocaine habit and as the title implies, he’s indeed a very, very bad lieutenant.

Based in New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Cage plays Lieutenant Terence McDonagh, a high functioning, deeply intuitive drug addict who is saddled with an agonizing back problem — an ailment Cage aptly portrays with a hunched back. A cocaine addict — at least that’s his preferred drug of choice although heroine and marijuana are never off the table, he boozes occasionally to level off the drug high and his life is such a loveless hell that he buys sex just for the sensation of being touched.

An updated version of the 1992 movie of the same name, it’s directed by Werner Herzog (“Grizzly Man”) and is a gritty, primitive crime drama which puts an out-of-control psychopathic police lieutenant on a collision course with disaster as he tries to solve the drug-related murder of a family from Senegal. Eva Mendes, who previously collaborated with Cage on “Ghostrider” further complicates his tumultuous life as Frankie, the prostitute he’s in love with and will do anything for.

With a bad back, an attitude to match, wrinkled suits, an unshaven chin and a penchant for swearing, Cage, in one of his best performances conveys a lost, sardonic character in tremendous real pain and plays Terence with raw honesty.

“When I play a character like that I have to understand why he’s like that so I can play the part truthfully,” says Cage. “I designed Terrence and came in with a vision. My mother was a dancer and so I like to use the body as part of the instrument of acting and I saw his back injury as an opportunity to transform myself. I didn’t need to be pushed. I just felt like I was in a zone and came in prepared and did what I had to do. I’ve been blessed to be eclectic and thankful for that.”

Shoot entirely in New Orleans, a city where Cage has very close connections to (has made five movies in the city), “Bad Lieutenant” also stars Vondie Curtis Hall as the captain and Val Kilmer who has little screen time as just another face on the force. Rapper Alvin “Xzibit” Joiner plays the drug Kingpin Big Fate in a role which Herzog claims was a very spontaneous casting decision.

“Xhibit had such authority and I loved his voice that in sixty seconds it was clear that he would play the gangster,” says Herzog. “He’s a man who really enjoys what he does in the film and it was clear almost instantaneously that this is the man I should have in the film.”

“Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans” releases in theatres Nov. 20
