QBEESCLOSET presents exclusive Ankara Fabric Collection

leave a comment »

HOUSTON – Strategically displayed at conspicuous sections of Monghuls Restaurant and lounge in Houston were an exclusive collection of Ankara fabrics and other unique products produced by adapting Ankara. The event which was hosted by Sade Adesuyi of QBEESCLOSET was a great forum to shop and network with other creative designers. The 2011 Ankara unveiling attracted observers and specially invited guests whom were entertained in a classy atmosphere while sipping on cocktails and bites of hors d’ oeuvres.

The Ankara fabric, formerly referred to as “Dutch Wax” from Holland, only became known as “Ankara” when the Turks started making cheaper versions. Interestingly, Nigeria, being such a vast and insatiable market, encouraged the birth and growth of fabric traders. In the early 60’s, Late Mrs. H.I.D Awolowo was amongst the first to import and sell lace fabrics. The Okunowo brothers were also amongst the primary importers of Damask in the late 50’s and early 60’s. Trading companies such as PZ, UAC and Zabadne were also primary importers of Dutch Wax and later Ankara in the 70’s.

The popularity of the light weight and colorful nature of the Ankara fabric encouraged the growth of local manufacturers in Nigeria. The demand for Ankara amongst West African countries led to production acceleration. Ultimately, unfair trading and smuggling by individuals and companies forced the suffocation of local production.

Ankara was the western rival to “Adire” but because the dye was faster and did not stain as much, locals abandoned Adire for the more colorful Ankara.

Ankara used to be associated with the poor but has now been magically transformed into the fabric of choice for the rich and famous who engage witty designers to conjure eye catchy outfits.

with 10 comments

She is young, talented and ambitious. Her thoughts about the future are exciting. Her belief in perfection is unprecedented. Miss Wendy Hancils, a native of Sierra Leone, West Africa is the youngest daughter of late major Hancils Bangura. Her mother is of Lebanese-Indian descent which accounts for her unique and striking features.

In a recent chat, Wendy Hancils explained her decision to be in the entertainment industry while mentioning her recent performances. “In 2010, I featured in the following movies; “Busted Life”, “Royal Dilemma 2″,” I surrender all”,” Ethical clashes” and “Blood brothers”. These movies will be released in 2011.

Wendy Hancils hosts a radio show on; “NewLiberiafm.com”. Her show which comes up every Saturday features a live talk show with updates on the latest news in the African Entertainment Industry, movies, music, and exclusive interviews with producers, directors, talented actors and actresses.

TA – Motivation towards Entertainment

WH – My motivation comes from first believing in myself, and how best I can become in the entertainment Industry. I have worked very hard to make sure that the work I do is appreciated by the audience that are going to watch my movies. I want to be the best that I can be in all areas that I’m going to be involved in. I don’t just want to be an Actress but also a fashion model, participate in commercials as well as produce my own movies. These are some of the areas that attract me to the Entertainment Industry.

TA – Experiences so far as an Actress

WH – So far, my experiences have been great as nothing bad or extraordinary has happened to me as an Actress. Thanks to God the Almighty father. I am going to work hard to make sure its stays that way.

TA – Back ground

WH – I attended Murray Deen preparatory school; (a private school) while my sisters and brother did their best in Lebanese International school back home Sierra Leone. I attended High Point High school in Beltsville, Maryland then later graduated from Bladensburg High school with a high school diploma.

I did not have any formal Acting training. I originally studied psychology and my minor is Criminal Justice. I’ve always know that I have the talents for acting since my childhood. Back home in Sierra Leone, I was into fashion shows, stage plays, and as a matter of fact in my private school Murray Deen preparatory school I won the beauty pageant. My late father, my Mom, sisters, brother and friends are very proud and happy for me. I recently featured alongside Nollywood actor Ramsey Noah in “Busted life”.

TA – Area needing improvement in the Nollywood Industry

WH – Nollywood has come a long long way. The movie industry has improved a lot and they are doing awesome things. Some of the areas that still need improvements include script writing. If the script is well written, we will be able to tap into the Western market not just the African market.

TA – Destination of Choice

WH – I will like to visit Brazil, Switzerland, Italy, Jamaica, and Dubai. I don’t have any particular reason for choosing these other than change of environment. Some have beautiful beaches and attractions.

TA – Favorite perfumes

WH – I can only name few which are Euphoria by Calvin Klein, Angel, Channel, Gucci.

TA – Likes and dislikes

WH – I like when people respect me for who I am. I like honesty in everything I do and I try my best to be that way. I also like people who keep it real, well mannered, intelligent, smart, ambitious, God fearing, charming, who believe in themselves and confidence.

I dislikes dishonesty, arrogant people, rudeness, fake people, liars, Atheist, self- centered, untidiness, to name a few.
